South Asia’s largest car assembly plant, the Volkswagen factory, is set to be inaugurated by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, according to UNP Deputy Leader and Senior Advisor to the President, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

Located in Kuliyapitiya and operated by Western Automobile, the factory currently assembles 25 vehicles daily, including cars, vans, and double cabs.

The facility is expected to generate 1,000 direct and 1,000 indirect job opportunities. A professional training school is also in the works, aiming to support local talent development. This venture is anticipated to lower vehicle costs, making automobiles more affordable for the Sri Lankan market.
